Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medicine needling technique in which fine needles are inserted into traditional meridian points along the body. These meridians or channels are believed to be the lines along which a person’s Qi or ‘life energy’ flows. The goal of acupuncture is to bring the body back into balance and harmony.
How Medical Acupuncture Differs From Traditional Chinese Acupuncture
Medical acupuncture follows the meridian points of traditional acupuncture and combines it with a western medicine approach of assessment and diagnosis. The acupuncture points are selected with the goal of reducing pain and inflammation in the affected tissue while improving function and mobility. Medical acupuncture is used to address both acute and chronic conditions of the musculoskeletal system.
